Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented formulation scientist to be a key member of the delivery team, to enable both early-stage discovery research efforts as well as the development of drug product formulations for our clinical candidates. This is a hands-on, on-site laboratory role, with approximately 80% lab-based work and 20% dedicated to data entry and experiment planning. This individual will be actively engaged in the design, optimization, and characterization of LNP formulations encapsulating nucleic acids (mRNA, DNA) and will interface with cross-functional teams including analytical, pharmacology, and manufacturing to advance pipeline programs.The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to develop highly intricate lipid-based nano-formulations, including optimization and troubleshooting of the formulation process and exploration of novel materials. Previous experience with formulations of lipid nanoparticles for the delivery of nucleic acid-based pharmaceuticals is required. The candidate is expected to be a strong collaborator who enjoys scientific discovery, has a passion for working on cutting-edge technology, and can communicate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of unique and novel nucleic acid-based formulations
• Prepare samples for internal studies, ensuring timely and accurate transfer of materials
• Characterize product profiles for process optimization and batch-to-batch reproducibility
• Maintain meticulous documentation of all experimental data, procedures, and protocols
• Review and analyze data and be able to present and explain across the functional teams
• Collaborate with a team of scientists to creatively solve problems and drive innovation
• Maintain high standards for scientific integrity and accountability
• Communicate across departments and support project teams
• Manage, supervise, and mentor 1-3 junior Research Associates as the company evolves

Requirements:

• PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related discipline with at least 1 year of relevant industry experience
• BS/MS with additional years of industry experience also acceptable
• Hands on experience with the following:
• Nano-formulation of nucleic acid-based therapeutics, filtration techniques, characterization of nanoparticulate matter
• HPLC, UV-Vis, plate-based fluorescence assays
• Able to conduct self-directed research and thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced entrepreneurial setting with a diverse team of coworkers
• Exceptional problem-solving skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, creativity, enthusiasm, and reliability
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and meticulous data documentation
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy
• Effective verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
• Capacity to supervise and mentor 1-3 junior Scientists and/or Research Associates
• Flexibility to adapt to evolving project priorities in a dynamic environment

Authorization

Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in San Diego, CA is $100,000 - $130,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc.
