Position Summary The Publications and Interpretative Manager is a key member of an ambitious exhibition team and is responsible for shepherding a wide array of exciting curatorial and interpretive materials and exhibition merchandise, including exhibition catalogues of high academic and visual caliber, gallery pamphlets and handouts, wall texts and object labels, and other ephemera through the editorial, design, and production processes, from concept through delivery. This includes overseeing the printing of exhibition catalogues, giving final press approval, and contracting and overseeing freelancers (i.e., copy editors, proofreaders, photographers, etc.). The position participates in all content development meetings, provides substantive aesthetic critiques of publications, graphics, and merchandise in both the design concept and review period, oversees the aesthetic installation of graphics including color proofing and graphic placement within the gallery space, and works directly with outside designers and printers to ensure the production of the highest quality materials. In addition, this position develops and oversees interpretive material for the galleries designed to reach a broad audience. These include but are not limited to audio, video, and digital complements to the exhibition narrative. This position also manages the development and production of exhibition merchandise for the ISAW gallery store, manages print and digital permissions requests (incoming and outgoing), liaises with the IT team regarding website updates related to exhibitions catalogues and merchandise, edits e-blast HTML templates on an as-needed basis, and manages the budgets for exhibition catalogues, graphics, and merchandise. Excellent organizational and diplomatic skills are absolute position requisites as well as a team-player attitude. Qualifications Required Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience. Preferred Education: Masters Degree preferred. Required Experience: 3-5 years experience in an editorial or interpretive role in a museum, cultural institution, or publishing house. Extensive experience managing the production (including budgeting and tracking) and printing of catalogues or other publications with strong visual content and graphic/didactic materials. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to plan production schedules, interact with a diverse population, and work under deadline pressure. Strong knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Excel is a must.
