The Land Surveyor/Survey Chainman will oversee and manage all aspects of survey equipment and support field operations to ensure accurate and efficient data collection. This position plays a key role in maintaining the integrity and reliability of fieldwork and survey documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and operate all instruments and measuring devices required for various survey assignments, including transit, level, theodolites, H.P. distance meter, ranger, chain, electrotype, and tellurometer.
  • Proficiently operate and maintain Trimble Total Stations and GPS equipment, ensuring accurate field data collection and equipment functionality.
  • Assist in determining elevations and laying out stakes by holding level rods or distance meter reflectors at designated points.
  • Mark measuring points using keel (marking crayon), paint, sticks, scratches, tacks, stakes, or monuments for accurate and visible field markings.
  • Set stakes at designated points and drive them into the ground, sometimes at specific elevations, using sledgehammers or other tools as needed.
  • Perform field calculations and utilize computer-based survey programs and AutoCAD software to document all phases of survey work with accurate, legible, and organized field notes.
  • Conduct research and prepare survey field packages ahead of fieldwork to ensure preparedness and efficiency.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications with a high level of accuracy.
  • Apply higher-level mathematical skills, including algebra and trigonometry, in support of survey measurements and layouts.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of field survey engineering methods, techniques, and the operation of GPS and survey instruments.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, site personnel, and internal team members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Survey Party Chief or supervisor.

Working Conditions:

  • Perform fieldwork in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and dusty environments.
  • Navigate and work on rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces, including undeveloped or construction areas.
  • Drive to and from job sites and work effectively in outdoor, field-based environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Chainman; two (2) years of college coursework in a related field preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must carry minimum personal auto insurance limits of $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident / $50,000 property damage or a $300,000 combined single limit (CSL).
  • Strong handwriting skills for documenting field notes and other project-related information.
  • Working knowledge of organizational policies, programs, standards, and administrative procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
