Job Summary

This internship position is for all current students and recent graduates (2024 or later). The Natural History Museum of Utah has an initiative to train and mentor students in the museum field. NHMU provides paid internship opportunities that are an extension of the classroom to meet this goal. The Natural History Museum of Utah is a participant in the Informal Science Education Enhancement (iSEE) collaboration, which seeks to provide students with experiences not typically available in the classroom that will spark their natural curiosity and sense of wonder while practicing science skills. As part of this, the Field Trip Education Intern will work closely with the Field Trip Coordinator and volunteers to create an engaging environment for students. This internship has a strong focus in activity facilitation, public speaking, and science communication for a K-12th grade audience. The intern will assist in welcoming field trip groups to NHMU and facilitate interactive, in-gallery programming for field trip visitors. Along with field trips, the Field Trip Education Intern will assist with other school programming related tasks such as evaluation, development of new activities, and weekly management of programming supplies. At NHMU we place a strong emphasis on providing an exceptional experience to every guest who visits the museum or participates in any of our programs. We believe that everyone at NHMU , at every level and in all departments, are a critical part of providing this level of experience. Therefore, all staff members receive ongoing training and are expected to consistently contribute to creating exceptional, memorable, and welcoming experiences for our guests, partners, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • This is an entry level internship position and on-the-job training is provided.

  • Strengthen oral and written communication skills through facilitation of in-gallery programming and orientations for field trip students.

  • Engage with K-12th grade students, teachers, and chaperones in an informal education environment.

  • Enhance customer service skills and experience working with various audiences during facilitation of the Field Trip education programs.

  • Build self-confidence with activity facilitation and development.

  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of programming supplies.

  • Work collaboratively with Museum staff to develop new programming.

  • Practice and grow project management and organizational skills.

  • Understand the role of informal education in Utah’s K-12 systems and the connection to Utah SEEd standards.

  • Learn to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

  • Assist in other assigned projects and activities to support the Field Trip and Teacher Resources team as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

This is a seasonal, temporary, non-benefited position that can be used for positions six months or less.

Seasonal work generally means work that by its very nature can only be performed during certain times of the year.
