Position Overview

The Business Coach will serve as the primary coaching resource for Scouting America councils and the Membership Engagement department. This role will leverage the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS)—adapted for nonprofit and volunteer-led environments—to equip councils, Council Support Teams (CSTs), and the Membership Engagement team with the clarity, discipline, and accountability needed to achieve membership growth, retention, and operational excellence. Internally, the coach will act as an accountability partner, ensuring that priorities (“Rocks”), key metrics, and problem-solving disciplines are consistently in place and followed. This role reports to the Executive Vice President, Membership Engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates EOS implementation for assigned councils, adapting tools for nonprofit and volunteer environments.
  • Guides council leadership teams through the Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO) process to clarify mission, long-term impact goals, and 90-day priorities.
  • Builds accountability charts that integrate staff and volunteer leadership roles.
  • Trains councils on data scorecard use to track mission-related KPIs (membership, units, retention, program engagement).
  • Facilitates quarterly and annual EOS sessions to assess progress, reset priorities, and solve critical issues.
  • Coaches council executives and boards on aligning culture, strategy, and execution.
  • Models and teaches effective Level 10 Meetings for leadership and program teams.
  • Documents and streamlines key processes (e.g., volunteer onboarding, recruitment campaigns, donor stewardship).
  • Acts as the Membership Engagement department’s internal coach, running EOS disciplines for the EVP and leadership team.
  • Facilitates department-level Rocks, scorecards, and accountability reviews.
  • Coaches leaders on improving team health, communication, and execution discipline.
  • Supports the EVP in preparing for and facilitating department quarterly/annual planning sessions.
  • Fosters a culture of accountability, transparency, and problem-solving in councils and within the department.
  • Identifies performance gaps and provide targeted coaching to leaders and teams.
  • Captures and shares best practices from high-performing councils.
  • Provides feedback and recommendations to the EVP to inform national membership strategies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of: Scouting programs, culture, and operational structures; EOS framework and its application in nonprofit and volunteer-led organizations; council operations, budget planning, and program performance management.
  • Skill in: Facilitating strategic planning sessions and leadership team coaching; adapting EOS tools for mission-driven, nonprofit contexts; building trust and rapport with senior leaders, boards, and volunteers; and, using data and scorecards to drive accountability and decision-making.
  • Ability to: Lead councils and teams through organizational change with patience and discipline; translate complex concepts into practical, actionable steps; manage multiple council engagements while providing high-quality coaching; and, maintain confidentiality and neutrality in coaching relationships.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of leadership, facilitation, or executive coaching experience to include experience leading strategic planning, performance coaching, and operational alignment initiatives.
  • Must be a certified EOS Implementer or equivalent deep EOS implementation experience (non-negotiable).
  • Have a proven track record as a business or organizational growth coach, ideally with nonprofit or youth-serving organizations.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally up to 40% for on-site coaching with councils.

Licenses

  • EOS Implementer certification preferred.
  • Coaching or facilitation certification (ICF, PCC, or similar) a plus.

Preference

  • Prior Scouting America council leadership or national role experience.
  • Demonstrated success coaching multi-stakeholder teams in complex, mission-driven environments.
  • Strong public speaking, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Eagle Scout rank (preferred).
